To play music there are like 150 programs that do it better than this piece of dung, same thing with videos. I think it’s amazing that even after what 30-40 years of development, Microsoft can’t get ONE damn thing right.

This is just a combined skin on top of Groove and WMP disguised as a new player. Oh well, I just wanted to see if it would install, there was never any chance of me using this “new” garbage, that apparently is yet another completely useless program at what it is supposed to do.

Not surprisingly it failed to install due to some missing things and hysterically funny it said to contact the developer for packages =) Hey Microsoft, got any packages? Yeah right. So, just for some laughs I tried this thing. Compare H.264 and SMPTE VC-1, MPEG-2 is a lossy video codec which regular used on HD DVDs and early Blu-ray discs. Therefore, all media player should support the above video codecs for Blu-ray video playback. Of course Windows Media Player and Groove Music as well, both supergarbage at what they are supposed to do. The Blu-ray disc mainly adopts 3 types of video codecs: MPEG-2, H.264/MPEG-4 AVC, SMPTE VC-1. I massacred my Windows 11 install, butchered it into a bleeding redmond corpse by removing every preinstalled app etc etc.

Have you tested the new Media Player, what do you think about it? It remains unclear whether the app will also be available for Windows 10, but since the Groove app is being replaced, one can only assume that the Media Player will support the old operating system. I'm guessing that the search indexing still points to the older version because the Store app uses the same listing. Even more oddly, searching for Groove Music lists the new Media Player in the results.

MTS), Xvid and DivX video codecs, AAC audio and 3GP, MP4 and MOV container formats, so downgrading to Windows Media Player 11 will remove these format support, although it will bring back some useful features of Windows Media Player 11 such as deskband or taskband. The Start Menu lists the app as Media Player, but Windows Search does not recognize the name, it displays the legacy Windows Media Player as the result. Note that Windows Media Player 12 adds native support for H.264 (AVCHD. Codecs are small programs that encode digital signals in a file or data and decode. Those are the only flaws in the app, otherwise it's quite good for playing local media files. To properly play video (and even music files), Windows Media Player required an appropriate codec. The mini-player cannot be resized beyond a certain point. I would have preferred a button to toggle the sidebar. to just display the icons, increase the size or maximize the window to bring the labels back. You can resize the app's window to collapse the sidebar labels, i.e. There doesn't seem to be any notable changes in the player since the first release. But, now that the app works on the Windows 11 stable channel, it is only a matter of time before Microsoft makes the news official. You may have noticed that the program's title says Media Player Preview, because it is still being tested.

Shedding the baggage of Windows Media Player and Groove Music is a good start. The new Media Player is ready to use, you can find more about its features in our previous article. But perhaps, in time, Windows 11's Media Player will become a worthy competitor. It's unlikely that this group will convert to a new media player, especially one that is in its infancy and lacking many of the features they'll be used to. It's free, open source, supports most video codecs out the box, is in constant development, and is available for Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android. Since Media Player will come with Windows 11, and likely be the default player, many will find themselves using it without consciously choosing to.įor others, they've been using one of the many other great free media players-most likely VLC Media Player, which is one of the best media players period.
